How does one encourage children to read?

This is a question we are often asked, and ask ourselves. There is, of course, no easy answer. One can only work at it: inspire by example, draw attention to specific interesting things in particular books, and so on. Our own commitment towards this continues through work and play, at leisure and at school, where the child spends a large part of the day. A major area which, we feel, has such potential but is often not fully explored, is the school library. Are children excited about coming to the library? Does it have an atmosphere that invites them to browse or to sit and read? If not, what can we do about it?

Goodbooks offers schools a helping hand with its School Club programme, which has a three-fold approach:

to make the library vibrant, dynamic and inspiring

to create awareness about books of all kinds

   to encourage reading
