Goodbooks
Teacher’s Centre organizes talks, lectures and
interactions with people who are addressing larger issues
in education. These interaction help to widen perspectives
and get an understanding of the myriad factors that are
influencing education today in our society.

A
panel discussion to mark the opening of the
Goodbooks Teachers Centre.
Panelists: Eunice Crook, director, South India,
British Council, Aruna Ratnam, Project Officer,
Education, UNICEF, Shakuntala Sharma, Correspondent,
Children's Garden School,
Mrs YG Parthasarathy, Dean
& Director, Padma Seshadri Group of Schools.
The focus of the discussion was the relevance of
English language skills in a majority of schools
and
the need to balance the teaching of English with the
teaching of the regional languages,
without one
affecting the other. The quality of the material
available for teaching English – both resource
materials for teachers and text books for students
and the teachers facility with the language were the
areas explored in the course of the discussion.

Literacy and why a democracy needs it

Information
is vital for a healthy democracy. But with the growing
power of the disseminators
of information – the media – it also becomes important
to learn to ‘read’ and ‘understand’ what
they really say. Speaking on the topic ‘Media
Literacy and Why Democracy Needs It’,
award-winning journalist and writer, P. Sainath, addressed
heads of schools and educationists
on how young generations should be enabled to make sense
of the world of media and
contextualise the information it provides

Teacher's
Centre Open House

The open house was the first
activity of the centre after the summer break. At the open
house, there was a demonstration of educational materials
displayed at the Teacher's Centre and a presentation of
the services that the centre provides. Teachers from over
25 schools participated and expressed their interest in
using the reference library and procuring the educational
aids displayed at the Teacher's Centre for their schools. |
